The body of work, The Middle was inspired through the discovery of the universal yet personal content in this work, “Held,” created in 2018.

Through the manipulation of surface ground I allude to the idea of preserving an unknown destination. Senior year forced me to process my plan for the future, what college, career and passions I will follow. When I was faced with this question I attempted to produce an appropriate, logical answer. However, I learned that I cannot control any outcome of a situation. Through trial and error of trying to manipulate situations, I realized all that I can do is trust that divine authority already has a plan for my life. It is wrapped in His love and protection. This is portrayed through the glass protecting the minute, fragile collage pieces. Divinity is represented through mathematical perfection as well as symbolism in this structure.
Each square is three by three inches, representing The Holy Trinity while they are lined seven by seven collage pieces. The number seven is symbolic to the beginning and abundance, including the initial creation of seven days. Circles and squares are known to represent perfection and divinity. Triangles are symbolic to creation (mountains) and The Holy Trinity (three points on a triangle). These can be found throughout the piece as a personal acknowledgement of trusting and having faith in His plan for my life. Graphite drawings further represent the idea of preservation of the future. For example the greenhouses and pots protect, provide, and care for plants. As well as the bird cage protecting the bird from danger. However it introduces the two viewpoints, the bird and the owner. The bird could feel trapped and contained however the owner is protecting, teaching and caring for the bird. Another symbolic drawing is the stacked containers in the formation of an altar. This represents how I can make idols out of trying to control circumstances. Often we contain our leftover food to preserve it for another time. However the food can deteriorate. This represents how building altars and attempting to preserve my own ideal future can result in destruction.
